ZACHARY, La. (AP) — After tearing her ACL in September, Mya Parker was looking for things to do to fill the space sports took up in her life.
So 15-year-old freshman Zachary High began creating NFTs, or non-fungible tokens, to combine his interests in art and investing. So far, she has earned over $10,000 selling her designs online.
“I never would have had time to do all of this before I got hurt,” Mya said, sitting in her mom’s real estate office. “It allowed me to earn a living. Well, not quite a life.
NFTs are digital objects, such as works of art or video clips, to which digital certificates of authenticity are attached. Because the property is attached to the NFT and stored on computers around the world, it is impossible to lose or destroy the object.
Some NFT artworks have sold for millions of dollars. Mya’s designs fetch up to $140,000 on the OpenSea NFT marketplace.
Mya has been part of the Zachary School System’s Talented Art Program since third grade. And she has been interested in investing for several years. Her grandfather took her to buy gold about two or three years ago and bought her shares in different companies as gifts to get good grades.
One of the things that Mya says got her interested in stocks was when she read a book about a girl who had stocks in Coca-Cola. She liked the idea of being able to own part of the beverage business.
She was so interested in investing that Candace Temple, Mya’s mother, said she would rush home from school every day to see how her stocks were performing.
“She was able to learn more about economics, about finance, and it allowed her to use her gifts,” Temple said.
Getting involved in investing and NFTs has also allowed Mya to take risks at an early age, she said, which is a good thing because people are hesitant to take risks as they get older.
Mya has done around 100 NFTs in a variety of different styles. Her mother recently gave her an iPad, which helped her improve her artistic skills.
“My art comes in two ways. Sometimes I have an experience and I create something out of that experience,” she said. “And sometimes I doodle when I’m bored.”
The key is to do lots of different things when you’re young and see what you do well, Mya said.
“It doesn’t matter what you are as long as your heart is good,” she said. “You will find out what you can do.”
