Australian law firm Mills Oakley has launched a new digital law firm in Sydney, headed by Alec Christie, who was hired as a partner in late October.

Responsible for establishing Myanmar’s first foreign law firm, which he then sold to a professional services firm of the Big Four, Christie is highly regarded for his ability to successfully develop and lead new practices.

With 30 years of experience, Christie recently served Ernst & Young (EY) as partner and leader in Asia-Pacific digital law and global leader in telecommunications law, for four years, developing teams in these areas.

He began his career with a five-year stint at Baker McKenzie in 1989, followed by a period in which he established the Myanmar law firm, affiliated with Lucy Wayne & Associates, in Vietnam.

Christie then held a two-year position at KPMG Legal, specializing in cybersecurity, privacy and IT procurement, followed by DLA Piper for over eight years as a partner in their intellectual property (IP) and technology practice. , joining EY in 2015.

Christie’s practice focuses on digital legal solutions in the financial services, healthcare and life sciences, online media and entertainment industries, as well as governments in Asia Pacific and Oceania.

Christie advises clients such as Microsoft, Westpac, ANZ and ASX on issues related to blockchain applications, cryptocurrency, procurement, big data, data analytics, cloud, exploration data, due diligence, e-commerce, data privacy, cybersecurity and information security, Internet of Things and artificial intelligence.

“We are committed to developing the digital culture of our business,” Mils Oakley CEO John Nerurker said in a statement. He added that IT and privacy are areas of growth for the company.

Elsewhere in cybersecurity and data privacy, Alexander White was appointed Bermuda’s first privacy commissioner.
