Muhammad Abubakar appointed PM’s digital media focal point – Latest News – The Nation


Muhammad Abubakar Umer has been honorarily named Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s Digital Media Focal Point.

In 2019-20, Abubakar completed a Masters in Communications Governance from the London School of Economics as a Chevening Scholar. Since then, he has worked with the Institute of Art and Culture as Head of Strategic Communications.

Abubakar also served in Punjab for five years and introduced the first ever digital media wing; third branch of the Directorate General of Public Relations (DGPR) to meet the modern needs of communication with the public. DMW in Punjab provided real-time feedback from people who helped deliver services effectively and improve governance in Punjab under CM Shehbaz Sharif.

Later, the federal government replicated this model and introduced it by establishing DMW under the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in Islamabad.

Abubakar is from Shakargarh and obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Computer Engineering from Lahore University of Management Sciences (LUMS) as a NOP scholar. He has worked in the field of information technology (IT) in the private and public sectors.

Taking to Twitter, the newly appointed focal person said, “This office will serve as a bridge between the government and the people and foster honest discourse and discussion.”
