Citrusw00d Productions Unveils Movies Created As Non-Fungible Tokens That Honor Chess History By Showcasing Critical Moves And Games
NEW YORK, NY, November 5, 2021 (SEND2PRESS NEWSWIRE) – Art collectors and chess enthusiasts will soon have the opportunity to own high-quality depictions of historically significant chess battles in the form of non-fungible tokens ( NFT) issued via Citrusw00d Productions. Citrusw00d has made a first pair of multimedia chess films in the OpenSea NFT Marketplace which will go on sale on Saturday, November 6, 2021.
Each approximately two-minute film presents in vivid visual detail a short sequence of movements that decided a historically significant game, followed by a text vignette describing the background and the players. Designed for the general public and art collectors, the content contains no chess notation.
Each NFT will be produced in a predefined number of editions, each bearing a unique digital certificate of authenticity registered on the Ethereum blockchain. The films appear in an OpenSea collection called “Chess Board Rapture”, viewable at https://opensea.io/collection/chess-board-rapture.
Upcoming additions to the collection will build on the theme of the honor of chess history by showcasing critical movements that decided important games from the distant and recent past.
The project is managed by Citrusw00d Productions, a start-up that works with members of the chess community to develop curated experiences aimed at deepening the public’s appreciation of the aesthetic beauty and historical traditions of the royal game.
Chess games, movements and players occupy a growing niche within the emerging digital art market. New momentum for creating and trading chess-inspired NFTs will come later in November, when the first World Chess Championship match in three years kicks off in Dubai. NBC will cover the game for one hour each day on its sports television network, NBCSN.
Chess itself is experiencing an explosion in both participation and viewership, rising into the ranks of the world’s fastest growing esports. The leading gaming site, Chess.com, hosts several million chess games daily. It had 74 million members in October, up 40% since the start of the year and 150% since January 2020. A 2-week amateur chess tournament between game stars and celebrities in February attracted 7.5 million viewers; a September sequel was sponsored by the cryptocurrency giant Coinbase.
“This growing visibility has spawned a proliferation of chess brands whose market influence extends far beyond the world of chess,” says Coordie64, the visual artist behind the Chess Board concept. NFT rapture. “Nothing like this has ever happened before – not even during Bobby Fischer’s chess boom of the 1970s.”
Mastercard recently recruited world chess champion Magnus Carlsen as global brand ambassador, part of a small group that includes Lionel Messi and Naomi Osaka. Carlsen was the world’s highest-paid esports professional in 2020, while Netflix chess drama The Queen’s Gambit was the third most-watched TV series of the year. Several esports organizations have ongoing sponsorship deals with professional and amateur chess players whose Twitch streams each have hundreds of thousands of subscribers.
Unlike other electronic sports, chess is widely recognized as an art form as well as competitive wrestling. It is not uncommon for chess tournaments to award “awards of excellence” for outstanding creativity on the chessboard. Frank Marshall, an American champion at the turn of the 20th century, made a gesture of such beauty that onlookers would have showered him with gold coins. Marcel Duchamp, a professional chess player and a world class artist, said that “all chess players are artists”.
