Plans revealed for new center of excellence for film and digital media in Limerick

WORK is underway to develop and open a new Film and Digital Media Center of Excellence in Limerick.

Funding for the project, totaling €4.9 million, was announced on Monday at the Limerick College of Further Education campus on Mulgrave Street in the city, which is run by the Limerick and Clare Education and Training Board.

The funding is part of 13 projects in the first tranche of capital investment under the government’s Strategic Infrastructure Upgrade Fund (SIUF) for Higher Education and Training (FET).

The SIUF investment is a larger program of capital investment made in the FET sector, which will total at least €50 million nationwide.

Higher and Further Education Minister Simon Harris, who visited the site of the new Center of Excellence, welcomed the funding announcement.

‘Earlier this year, during a visit to Limerick, I announced the purchase of property by LCETB in Mulgrave Street,’ Minister Harris said.

“I am pleased to announce that the LCETB has received approval in principle to modernize this building and create a new Center of Excellence in Film and Digital Media.”

“This will allow the LCETB to strengthen the links that already exist with Film in Limerick and local industries, as the main provider of film and digital media education and training in the Mid-West region. This is a key step in the strategic development of the continuing education offer in the region”, added the Minister.

Once opened, the Center of Excellence is expected to accommodate up to 250 learners of specific courses in several areas such as film and television production, music technology, photography and digital media.

“I would like to acknowledge the work of the LCETB to bring us to this stage. This investment announced today demonstrates their continued commitment to strengthening the supply of FET in Limerick and surrounding areas,” said Minister Harris.
