The new Digital Learning Commons at Rutgers University The Archibald S. Alexander Library provides students from more than 16 degree programs and four professional schools with spacious collaboration and study space. Designed by Spiezle Architectural Group, Inc., the Common is among the oldest and largest of New Brunswick’s campus libraries.
The library is the main center for studies in the social sciences and humanities and also houses special collections, university archives and the East Asian Library. With full accessibility, the library modernization project incorporates an open concept approach providing a welcoming atmosphere and spacious spaces for group meetings, research, project development and study sessions.
The color palette showcases the open concept design with bright tones that complement the natural light coming in from the windows. The redesign also incorporates adaptable furniture, sound barriers, and a variety of designated seating areas for quiet study or active work.
“Our design vision focused on creating an open and inviting environment that incorporated a variety of technologies and services, while capitalizing on the existing physical qualities of the space, which included high ceilings, dynamic views and natural light,” John Wright, director of higher education at Spiezle, said in a press release. “Improving the student experience was at the forefront of every decision. Now more than ever, it’s crucial to create responsive and adaptable learning spaces, focused on the well-being of students and faculty, that support and promote the diverse offerings that truly define the Rutgers experience.
“The Digital Learning Commons has already become a flagship destination on the College Avenue campus and will inspire social and educational progress for decades to come,” added Wright.
