Punjab University (central unit) Department of Digital Media and National Press Trust (NPT) have entered into an agreement (MoU) to promote digital media education and jointly organize training and educational development programs to improve the standards of journalism.
In this regard, a ceremony was held at the office of the Vice-Chancellor during which the Vice-Chancellor of UP, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad, the Chairman of the National Press Trust, Munir Ahmad Khan, the Chairman of the Department of digital media, Prof. Dr. Sawera Shami, faculty members, Dr. Ayesha Ashfaq, Dr. Shazia Ismail Toor, Madiha Maqsood and others participated in the event.
Addressing the ceremony, Prof. Dr. Niaz Ahmad said spreading fake news was one of the biggest issues facing the media in the current era of social media. He explained that providing accurate information to the public was essential to maintaining high standards of journalism. He pointed out that given the importance of the growing media industry, the university has modernized the School of Communication Studies and created 6 new departments to meet the needs of the market.
Appreciating Professor Dr Sawera Shami and Mr Khan for the MoU, he said it was part of efforts to bridge the gap between academia and industry and would solve important issues facing the media industry. is confronted.
Mr Khan said the TNP, in conjunction with DDM, would try to develop a mechanism to stop fake news. Prof. Sawera Shami informed that the DDM would launch campaigns to promote media literacy and curb the spread of fake news. She told attendees that DDM and NPT would also work jointly on various research and development programs. She said DDM will strive to introduce relevant curriculum at relevant education levels to raise awareness of digital media literacy.
“As part of this collaboration, at least 15 digital media items/materials would be produced by faculty and students per month for this purpose,” Ms. Sawera pledged, adding that internship and job opportunities would also be offered to DDM students as part of this project. .
