Vote Now Open for Cornerstone Digital Media Wall Art Competition

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 19, 2021) – University of Kentucky employees, students, alumni and members of the greater Lexington community are now invited to vote for the winners of the Cornerstone digital wall art competition. The vote will determine the selections of artwork for the People’s Choice.

The inaugural call for art, which took place in December, focused on the following two themes:

Blacks live in the Bluegrass:

In 2020 we saw yet another public outcry against systemic racism and calls for social change. In towns and cities across the state, protesters took to the streets to claim that Black Lives Matter. This call seeks images that recognize the deep legacy of racism in our country; recognize the pain it inflicts on our communities of color; protest systemic injustice and represent a desire for change; underline the liberation and joy of blacks; and celebrate the continued vital contributions of our Black and Brown citizens to life in the Commonwealth. They can include, but are not limited to, photographs of protests, scans of posters, images of murals, portraits of black leaders, and works that indicate a fairer future.

Kentucky facing COVID-19:

During the global pandemic, Kentucky stepped up to fight disease, keep essential services available, and help our community stay strong. This open appeal seeks digital art that celebrates the contributions of frontline workers, mourns the loss of loved ones, and addresses the complex range of feelings associated with physical estrangement, economic hardship and systemic inequalities that the pandemic has brought to bear. intensified. This series aims to show moments of struggle, strength and resilience in the face of the challenges that the pandemic has presented to our community. Works featured in this series can include portraits of essential workers, scenes from daily life in quarantine, and illustrations that capture moments of togetherness despite the need for social distancing, among other possibilities.

The images were submitted by amateur and professional content creators, some affiliated and some unaffiliated in the UK. A jury of professors, staff, students and members of the UK community will select the finalists in each of the two rounds of open calls. The People’s Choice category is being voted on until April 2.

Generously funded by a grant from Coca-Cola, 10 cash prizes of $ 1,000 each will be awarded for artistic excellence (five in each round of open calls) in the following categories:

  • UK student award
  • UK Faculty and Staff Award
  • Kentucky Community Award (eligibility limited to non-UK students, faculty, and staff)
  • Equity and Inclusion Award (eligibility limited to people of color)
  • People’s Choice Award (online voting mechanism to select the winner)
